How do you feel about being paid for your work?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 29, 2007:
On the few occasions when I have been paid to sing, it has felt wonderful! Like the icing on the cake! On top of the high I get from performing, the knowlegde that people are willing to pay to hear what I do, just makes it that much sweeter.
However if I tried to sing for a living I'm pretty sure it would not be so sweet. There might be too much stress, for example once there was a concert scheduled (for a group of 8 singers I sang with) and I had a cold. I didn't cancel because there was no rescheduling possible, and that performance was very difficult, and of course I am glad there was no recording made at that one!
My "regular" paid work is rewarding, too, but I wouldn't do it if I didn't get paid. It's not my passion, but it is very interesting, absorbing. But I feel great about getting paid for that work too;-)

It's a challenge to get paid for your passion. I think that's why lots of people keep them separate. They don't want the stress associated with making a living connected to the thing they do which nurtures them. I went down this road a few years ago with yoga. I was really into it, so when a teacher-training program was offered at the studio where I was practicing, I decided to take it. Very early on it became apparent that I truly didn't want to teach yoga - I wanted to practice it. So, I studied yoga philosphy during the course and did a lot of writing instead.
